According to several sources, Sabrina Ionescu had surgery last Friday to fix an injury to her right thumb. To stabilize the ulnar collateral ligament, the standout guard for the New York Liberty underwent thumb surgery.
Ionescu, who turned 27 on Friday, shared a picture of herself on social media on Sunday, showing her thumb and hand covered in a big cast. The former Oregon Ducks star wrote in the post’s caption, “Getting my thumb fixed was quite the bday present,” as if to imply that she underwent the operation on her birthday.
According to Alexa Philippou of ESPN, the surgery was deemed successful, and Ionescu should be back on the court in four weeks.
ESPN reports that Ionescu suffered the injury during Game 4 of the WNBA Finals. The injury wasn’t made public until after the Liberty won the Finals after defeating the Minnesota Lynx in the pivotal Game 5. It was the first championship the Liberty had ever won.
Ionescu struggled in Game 5 due to the thumb injury, going 1-for-19 overall, missing nine of ten 3-point attempts, and scoring five points.
Ionescu won the WNBA championship, was named to the second team of the WNBA this season, and won an Olympic gold medal with USA Basketball this summer.
