This week marks the return of winter whale watching to the Oregon coast.
The two recognized whale-watching seasons in Oregon are winter and spring, and they coincide with the gray whale migration. The whales migrate south down the West Coast to Mexico in the winter.
The Oregon State Parks department organizes the activities.
The dates of the Winter Whale Watch Week are December 27–31.
According to Oregon State Parks, there will be fifteen authorized whale-watching locations along the Oregon coast throughout the migration.
According to the state parks website, volunteers will be on hand at each location to assist you in locating the whales and respond to your inquiries.
In recent weeks, there have been large waves off the coast of Oregon. Follow safety precautions whenever you go whale watching because stormy weather and high tides can create perilous conditions. Never turn your back on the ocean, keep a safe distance, and keep an eye out for sneaker waves.
Events for spring whale watching will happen in March, right before spring break.
