The Lunar New Year is a time for feasting, customs, and spending time with loved ones. It is considered the most important festival of the year in many Asian countries. Bakeries and restaurants in Oregon are commemorating the event with unique delicacies that pay homage to the holiday’s emblems of wealth, harmony, and good fortune.

These three locations provide delectable ways to celebrate, from savory croissants to fruity and sweet sweets.

Blooms of Sugar

This Bethany neighborhood dessert shop with Asian influences is well-known for its exquisitely adorned cakes that are on show in the window. The store is selling a special menu for Lunar New Year, which may be ordered in advance and picked up on Sunday, January 26. The menu has an assortment of cookie boxes inspired by Vietnamese customs, a pineapple tart, which represents good fortune, and a lava custard mooncake, which represents togetherness and reunion. Until midnight on this day, January 23, pre-orders can be placed online at www.sugarblooms.net or by phone at 503-430-1447.

For those who miss the deadline, limited amounts of mooncakes, pineapple tarts, cookie boxes, and individual cakes with a Lunar New Year motif will also be offered in-store the following week. In addition, a variety of Lunar New Year sugar cookies will be available at Chiquito de Cielo Pdx for the next two weeks.

In honor of Lunar New Year, this creative bakery is reintroducing its beloved char siu croissant. This flaky croissant, which was inspired by Cantonese barbecue pork buns, is stuffed with marinated char siu that has been marinated for three days and stir-fried in a thick Chinese barbecue sauce. It is then topped with pickled green onions and toasted sesame seeds. All three locations are selling the special treat through February 28.
