Where could Oregon State go bowling if Beavers beat Boise State?

Are you implying that there is a possibility?

This week, Oregon State and the chance to qualify for the Bowl are giving the old Jim Carrey statement a workout. After defeating Washington State 41-38 last Saturday, the Beavers are at 5-6 and need one more victory to earn a postseason berth.

A 20-point underdog victory on the road against a team desperate to qualify for the College Football Playoffs is all that is required.

There have been more bizarre incidents. Let’s assume that the Beavers defeat Boise State and advance to 6-6. Then what?

In terms of 2024 bowl assignments, Oregon State and all other historic Pac-12 institutions are in a unique position this year.

Despite being dispersed across the nation in the Big 10, Big 12, ACC, and Pac-12 this season, the former Pac-12 schools unite in their pursuit of bowl qualification. Priority is given to bowl contracts that were in place prior to the conference’s dissolution a year ago.

For 2024 and 2025, the last two years of the conference bowl contracts, the hierarchy was adjusted.

Oregon (11-0), Arizona State (9-2), Colorado (8-3), Washington State (8-3), Washington (6-5), USC (6-5) and California (6-5) are the seven former Pac-12 institutions that are qualified to play in the game.

Utah (4-7), UCLA (4-7), Arizona (4-7) and Stanford (3-8) are the four teams that are out.

Oregon State is all that remains.

Assume that Oregon is included in the CFP. If Arizona State defeats Arizona and advances to the Big 12 championship game, it may be headed to the CFP. Although it’s unlikely, Colorado isn’t completely out of the CFP.

The teams in the Pac-12 bowl hierarchy are Independence, Sun, LA, Las Vegas, Holiday, and Alamo. If ASU misses the playoffs, the Pac-12 will have a clean slate because Oregon is in the CFP.

Six bowl slots, six teams available. What if Oregon State qualifies as well?

If there are seven bowl-eligible teams vying for six bowls and Oregon is the sole CFP team, Oregon State won’t be left behind. According to a Pac-12 spokesperson, OSU will find a landing site via the conference’s connections to other bowl games.

In all likelihood, the Pac-12’s contracted bowls will select USC, California, and Washington—other six-win teams—over the Beavers. One, this weekend might see all three reach seven victories. Two, Oregon State is not as appealing as USC and Washington as a brand. California defeated the Beavers 44–7.

Oregon State’s bowl options are as follows:

Independence: this becomes the Beavers’ bowl destination if Arizona State (or Colorado) get a CFP berth. On December 28, a game against an AAC institution is played in Shreveport, Louisiana. The game starts at 6:15 p.m. In 2023, Texas Tech defeated California 34–14.

Gasparilla: A Tampa pre-Christmas bowl? Sure, please. Raymond James Stadium will host the Gasparilla on December 20 versus an ACC or SEC institution. The 12:30 p.m. kickoff hour was excellent. In previous year’s Gasparilla, Central Florida defeated Georgia Tech 30–17.

Armed Forces: The Beavers would do well to land there because it’s a bowl game on December 27 in Fort Worth, Texas, most likely against a Big 12 team. Either 9 a.m. or 12:30 p.m. (Pacific time; add two hours for actual time in Fort Worth) might be the early kickoff time. Air Force defeated James Madison 31–21 in 2023.

Boca Raton: Florida Atlantic Stadium hosted one of the early bowl games on December 18 in Boca Raton, Florida. Although the opponent’s identity is unknown, it is most certainly from one of the Power conferences. The game will start at 2:30 p.m. Last year, South Florida defeated Syracuse 45-0 in Boca Raton.
