After throwing a 28-yard pass to wide receiver Quentin Johnston, the star quarterback for the Los Angeles Chargers hobbled off the field, but he refused to let a leg injury stop him. Shortly before the first half ended, he returned on the Chargers’ subsequent drive after missing one play.

Herbert claimed that although the hit hurt a little at first, he wasn’t going to watch his teammates try to win a crucial game.

Following the game, Herbert told reporters, “I just took a shot to the knee, but I should be okay.” I just had a shot there and had to come off because I was hurting. I went back in because I felt good about leaving.

Throughout the second half, the quarterback was in perfect condition. In order to erase Kansas City’s 13-0 deficit at halftime, he led the Chargers on consecutive touchdown drives. The Chargers led 14–13 entering the fourth quarter after Herbert hit Johnson with a 4-yard touchdown throw. Late in the game, Herbert led the Chargers on a 14-play drive that took over eight minutes and ended with a field goal, giving them a 17–16 lead.

The majority of Herbert’s output came after he sustained what coach Jim Harbaugh claimed was a contusion. He completed 21 of 30 throws for 213 yards, a touchdown, and no picks. Herbert’s perseverance in playing through the injury was commended by Harbaugh.

When asked what the diagnosis was, Harbaugh responded to reporters after the game, “Contusion, leg contusion.” As tough as they come. A fighter.
