The terrible season for the San Francisco 49ers has gotten worse.
The 49ers lost 35-10 at Buffalo on Sunday night, getting blown out for the second straight game. Christian McCaffrey, a running back, may have sustained yet another severe injury to make matters worse. On Sunday night, McCaffrey suffered what coach Kyle Shanahan described as a posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) damage in his right knee.
Following the game, Shanahan told reporters, “I think potentially [it’s season-ending].” Although I’m not entirely sure yet, I believe PCL typically lasts a few weeks.
Shanahan did not provide a timeline on McCaffrey’s injury or if he will be able to play in any of the team’s remaining five games.
On first-and-10, McCaffrey took a handoff and began to sprint, but he was hit and instantly went down. He stood up, walked limping down the sidelines, and went into the blue medical tent.

The club declared him out for the rest of the game after first questioning his ability to return.
There is conjecture that McCaffrey’s prior run may have caused the injury. After bursting up the middle for an 18-yard gain, McCaffrey fell hard on his right knee after Buffalo safety Taylor Rapp tripped him.
Knee injuries most usually occur during the previous #CMCplay. On shoestring tackle, be concerned about a PCL sprain in your right knee. He feels unwell and collapses on the subsequent run.aeQfmoS53x pic.twitter.com/
After recuperating from an Achilles ailment, McCaffrey appeared to be getting back to his 2023 Offensive Player of the Year form when the injury happened. McCaffrey has run for 53 yards on seven carries and two receptions for 14 yards following three inconsistent games. His longest run of the season was eighteen yards in the first quarter.
After the game, Shanahan told reporters it was disappointing. He had a fantastic practice week, and I could see his intensity and everything. He looked fantastic, as if he had just gotten his shoestring there. It was difficult for our team to be without him, and I felt bad for him.
After missing the majority of training camp and all eight of San Francisco’s games due to bilateral Achilles tendinitis that began in early August, McCaffrey had made four appearances since his comeback.
McCaffrey and the squad are in danger of disaster just when it seems like they are getting into their rhythm.
According to San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy, “We all saw what he was doing, and he was on fire,” he told reporters. He looked fantastic. It’s huge when you hit the holes hard, bounce off players, and make some really explosive plays. You lose one of the league’s top running backs in that manner. It kind of takes away how we accomplish some things on the offensive, in my opinion.
Although McCaffrey might make a comeback before the season ends, the 49ers (5-7) are in grave danger of missing the playoffs after losing three straight games. For the rest of the season, they might choose to bench McCaffrey.
