Walmart has issued a recall for 9,535 cases of its Great Value brand apple juice across 25 states, including Illinois, after the FDA found elevated levels of arsenic in the product.
The recall was prompted by an FDA announcement on August 15th, citing the potential for temporary negative health effects from consuming the juice, although serious health problems are unlikely.
Darin Detwiler, a food policy expert at Northeastern University, emphasized that while apple juice can be safe when consumed in moderation, it’s essential for consumers, particularly children, to diversify their fluid intake to reduce potential risks. This recall serves as a reminder to avoid relying on a single beverage for hydration.
Walmart has removed the affected product from its stores and is collaborating with the supplier to investigate the issue. So far, no illnesses have been reported due to the recalled juice, but consumers are advised to exercise caution and seek alternatives.
