Tom Marty, a distinguished veteran from the Brazos Valley and former Commander of the American Legion Post 159 in Bryan, has been elected as the State Commander of the American Legion during its annual convention held in Austin, Texas.
The American Legion, established by Congress in 1919, stands as the largest and oldest veterans’ organization in the nation. Committed to community service, it upholds four core pillars: Veterans’ Affairs and Rehabilitation, National Security, Americanism, and Children and Youth.
Marty’s career within the American Legion has been marked by exemplary service. He previously served as District Vice-Commander and spent six years as the State Training Chair, instrumental in launching the Texas Legion College. This initiative provides essential training to Legionnaires across Texas through mobile educational programs hosted at various posts. Following his term as State Vice Commander in 2023, Marty undertook a year-long campaign, visiting numerous posts and engaging extensively with members across the state.
His dedication to service began in the United States Air Force, where Marty served as a Security Policeman from 1981 to 1987. Transitioning to civilian life, he pursued a 32-year career in law enforcement and investigation. Since retiring in 2013, Marty has been deeply involved in volunteer work, contributing significantly to organizations such as the Bush Presidential Library, the City of College Station Parks Board, the Brazos County Veterans/Mental Health Court Committee, and Wellborn Baptist Church.
