Trump wants to end daylight saving time. What it could mean for Oregon

Oregon lawmakers pushed to abolish daylight saving time earlier this year, and President-elect Donald Trump wants to do the same.

Trump stated on his social media platform on Friday that once he assumes office, he will take all necessary steps to stop the twice-yearly time changes.

Despite its small but powerful support base, the Republican Party will do all in its power to end Daylight Saving Time, but it shouldn’t! He wrote in the post that Daylight Saving Time is incredibly expensive for our country and cumbersome.

For Oregonians, ending the eight months of daylight saving time would involve significant changes, including an hourly shift in time. 97 days more sunrises before 5 a.m. would occur in Portland than there are at the moment.

In mid-June, sunrise would occur as early as 4:21 a.m., and summer evening sunsets would occur no later than 8 p.m.

Legislators in Oregon have made alternating attempts throughout the years to establish daylight saving time and standard time as permanent year-round. During this year’s brief session, their most recent attempt to do away with the biannual time change by switching back to standard time year-round failed.

A permanent shift to standard time could benefit many people’s health, according to Elizabeth Steiner, the Democrat and physician who is running for treasurer of Oregon. Steiner was previously a member of the state Senate. The American Medical Association is among the bodies that have come to the same conclusion, according to the Associated Press.
