Trump Appointee Faces Backlash Over Comment on Long-Term Social Security Disability Benefits

During a March 20, 2025, appearance on the All-On Podcast, President Trump’s Department of Commerce appointee Howard Lutnick said he believes fraud is possibly happening within the Social Security Administration’s disability program.

Lutnick explained himself by saying, “We don’t have to take one penny from someone who deserves Social Security, not one penny for someone who deserves Medicaid, Medicare. What we have to do is stop sending money to someone who’s not hurt, who’s on disability for 50 years. It’s ridiculous.”

Lutnick also claimed that people familiar with payment systems, like Elon Musk, who co-founded PayPal, understand that the “easiest way to find the fraudster is to stop payments and listen.”

According to the latest SSA data, at least 286,948 individuals in the state of Alabama received monthly payments from the Title 2 Disability program. Additionally, the agency provides Title 16 Supplemental Security Income payments to over 140,000 disabled residents.
