Next week, TriMet will remember renowned civil rights activist Rosa Parks by waiving bus and MAX train fares for a whole day.
Tuesday, February 4, the day Parks was born in 1913, will see free public transportation trips for all.
On a bus in Montgomery, Alabama, in 1955, Parks, who was Black, refused to give up her seat to a white passenger.
The civil rights movement, which opposed state-sanctioned segregation and other forms of racial discrimination in the United States, saw the act of civil disobedience as a turning point.
“We are proud to honor her brave example,” TriMet said in a statement. On Parks’ birthday in 2021, the transportation agency started providing free bus and MAX trips.
At the age of 92, Parks passed away in 2005.
