Toledo man charged with murder 3 years after another man disappeared, thanks to cold-case investigation

According to officials, a Toledo man was detained by Newport police last week on suspicion of killing another guy three years prior.

Murphy According to a statement from the Newport Police Department, Calvin Henry II, 54, has been charged with second-degree murder, tampering with evidence, and abuse of a corpse in relation to the suspected victim’s disappearance in January 2022. According to court documents, Henry is also accused of first-degree burglary.

The investigation was taken on by the Lincoln County District Attorney’s Office Cold investigation Unit months after Ryan Staggs, 30, of Newport, vanished. According to authorities, the search on Dec. 27, 2024, resulted in a residence on Northwest 7th Street in Newport where specially trained canines detected the scent of human remains but failed to locate them.

Police discovered human bones that they said seemed to be Staggs’s when they examined a shallow grave site in a rural area of the county less than two weeks later. According to Newport police, the identity has not yet been verified by the county medical examiner.

Prosecutors successfully requested that the Lincoln County court presiding over the case seal the documents outlining Henry’s motivations as their main suspect, claiming that disclosing those facts could compromise the investigation, therefore it is unknown why they suspect him.

Anyone with information regarding Staggs’ murder is urged by the police to call Newport Police Detective Darren Cicerone at 541-574-3348.
