Three-point woes continue for Oregon State women in a lopsided loss to UC Irvine

The Oregon State women’s basketball team lost to UC Irvine 60-48 at Gill Coliseum on Sunday, and their offense, and especially their three-point shooting, continued to struggle.

The Anteaters didn’t calm down until they had a 26-point lead halfway through the fourth quarter after exploding late in the first half. OSU made the gap respectable by outscoring UC Irvine 17-3 in the last 3:15.

The Beavers ended 3 of 17 from beyond the arc and missed their first 13 three-point attempts. This season, Oregon State (3-7) is just shooting 20.7% from three. OSU’s three-point shooting percentage is lower than that of only five out of 353 Division I teams.

Despite shooting only 35%, UC Irvine (7-3) made seven three-pointers, including a flurry of three straight to close out the first half and begin the game-winning run.

No Oregon State player scored more than ten points. For the Beavers, Tiara Bolden, AJ Marotte, Catarina Ferreira, and Kelsey Rees each scored eight points. OSU’s field goal percentage was 33%.

Hunter Hernandez and Deja Lee led UC Irvine with 11 points apiece.

Since coach Scott Rueck took over the program in 2010, Oregon State has never had a losing record through ten games, with a current record of 3-7.

The contest saw just one deficit for UC Irvine, which has been first or second in the Big West the last four years. For the majority of the first half, Oregon State stayed with the Anteaters. With 2:22 remaining before halftime, Rees made two free throws to bring the Beavers within 23-21.

The bottom then dropped out.

Neveah Dean, Ines Gnahore, and Lee made three-pointers in the last 100 seconds in the first half to give the Anteaters a 32–21 halftime advantage. UC Irvine increased the advantage to 15 points by using that momentum to start the third quarter with a 6-0 run.

With a 46-29 lead at the end of the third quarter, the Anteaters dominated the game by outscoring Oregon State 11-2 at the beginning of the fourth quarter. The Beavers had their finest period of the game, finishing down 57-31, thanks to three-pointers from Marotte and Bolden that capped a 17-point three-minute outburst.

This week, Oregon State travels to Kihei, Hawaii, for the Maui Classic, the Beavers’ final two nonconference games. OSU will play Miami on Friday and Western Kentucky on Thursday.
