Although Portland is known across the country for its ice cream and doughnuts, isn’t it really more of a vegetarian rice bowl and bike-powered smoothie town at its core?
The Whole Bowl, a food truck chain that has survived for almost 25 years by serving just one thing—a vegetarian rice and bean bowl with a basic assortment of toppings—has been acquired by Ryan Carpenter, owner of the once-bike-powered smoothie cart turned no-bike-brick-and-mortar chain Morberi. This move should serve as a reminder to Portlanders of who they really are.
In 2001, Tali Ovadia established The Whole Bowl. The tali sauce that comes with every bowl is largely responsible for her popularity.
According to a Moberi representative, the Whole Bowl offer ended last week. Additionally, in February, The Whole Bowl, which is owned by Carpenter, will open a new store in a former Moberi on Kruse Way in Lake Oswego.
In a press statement, Carpenter, who also sells ai bowls at Moberi, said, “I’m excited to now offer two variations of healthy bowls to the Portland community.” The Whole Bowl has been a Portland mainstay for more than 20 years.
According to Carpenter, Tali was among the first pioneers in Portland to launch a food cart and helped create the original Moberi, which had a smoothie mixer powered by a bike. Over the years, we have had enterprises next to one other, such as the Portland Food Hall and the Portland Airport. I’ve always loved The Whole Bowl, so I’m delighted that Tali is giving me the responsibility of continuing its history.
No, before you ask. Smoothies will no longer be available at The Whole Bowl.
