Jon Himes was a member of the search and rescue team that went out to locate two hikers from Portland who went missing earlier this week in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest.
For three days, they trudged through damp snow and woodlands in temperatures close below freezing. The volunteers assisted authorities in recovering the bodies of the missing hikers who were discovered dead from exposure on Friday. After that, Himes and the other volunteers from the Skamania County Sheriff’s Office search and rescue team put their equipment away and attempted to get some sleep in preparation for the next call.
