Lou Dobbs, the well-known political commentator and former anchor of “Lou Dobbs Tonight” on CNN and Fox Business, has passed away at the age of 78. His death was confirmed through a message posted on his social media accounts on Thursday. The statement read, “It’s with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of ‘the great Lou Dobbs.’ Lou was a fighter til the very end — fighting for what mattered to him the most, God, his family, and the country. Lou’s legacy will forever live on as a patriot and a great American. We ask for your prayers for Lou’s wonderful wife Debi, children, and grandchildren.”
Former President Donald Trump first shared the news on Truth Social, writing, “The Great Lou Dobbs has just passed away — A friend, and truly incredible Journalist, Reporter, and Talent. He understood the World, and what was ‘happening,’ better than others. Lou was unique in so many ways, and loved our Country. Our warmest condolences to his wonderful wife, Debi, and family. He will be greatly missed!”
Dobbs, known for his distinctive broadcasting style and strong political views, has left a significant mark on the world of cable news. Fox News Media also paid tribute, stating, “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Lou Dobbs. An incredible business mind with a gift for broadcasting, Lou helped pioneer cable news into a successful and influential industry. We are immensely grateful for his many contributions and send our heartfelt condolences to his family.”
In recent times, Dobbs had been absent from his iHeartRadio show, “The Great America Show with Lou Dobbs,” and his live-streamed show “Lou Dobbs Tonight” for over a week. Despite his absence, his influence remained strong, with many recalling his passionate conversations, including a notable live discussion with Trump on July 3 about the Supreme Court’s ruling on presidential immunity from criminal prosecution.
Dobbs was a strong supporter of Trump and often voiced controversial opinions, including the “birther” conspiracy theory about former President Barack Obama’s citizenship and false claims about the 2020 presidential election being rigged. These views eventually led to the cancellation of his Fox Business show in 2021, a day after Fox News and Dobbs, along with other hosts, were sued for $2.7 billion by voting technology company Smartmatic for spreading false election claims. Fox has countered this lawsuit, accusing Smartmatic of filing a frivolous claim.
Dobbs began his illustrious career at CNN, where he worked for over two decades. He started as an anchor for “Moneyline” in 1980, which was later renamed “Lou Dobbs Tonight” in the early 2000s. He left CNN in 2009 and later joined Fox Business, where he continued to influence the political discourse through his shows.
