Texas has implemented the SCOPE Act, a new law requiring parental consent for children to create social media accounts. Enacted as part of House Bill 18, signed by Gov.
Greg Abbott in 2023, the law aims to give parents greater control over their children’s online activities. The legislation responds to growing concerns about the dangers of unsupervised social media use, including risks like cyberbullying and online predators.
North Texas Republican Rep. Shelby Slawson, who authored the bill, highlighted the need for this measure by citing instances where social media misuse led to serious harm.
Despite opposition from tech companies like Meta, which claims to already have safety measures in place, the law’s provisions for parental oversight are now in effect.
While major parts of the law took effect recently, some provisions, such as those requiring platforms to filter harmful content, have been blocked by a judge.
However, the requirement for parental consent remains enforceable, signaling a significant move in regulating children’s digital activities in Texas.
