As the area was crowded with holiday shoppers, a teenage kid was reportedly shot and injured Friday afternoon in the Clackamas Town Center parking lot in front of the Barnes & Noble store.
According to a family member who spoke to The Oregonian/OregonLive, the teenager was in a car attempting to flee when at least one shooter started shooting. According to the relative, the teenager managed to leap from the vehicle and dash across the parking lot before being caught up and sent to a hospital. We don’t know the teen’s condition.
Following an isolated incident at the Clackamas Town Center parking lot, the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office reported that they had apprehended a person of interest and that an injured person had been transported to a hospital. According to the sheriff’s office, the mall and surrounding establishments stayed open.
Witnesses reported finding at least four shell casings in the parking area close to the shooting scene. The gunman or gunmen fled in the direction of a neighboring TriMet station. Whether they are in captivity is unknown.
According to Brian McCall, a spokesperson for the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office, the altercation was not an active shooter scenario, but he advised people to stay away from the area.
In an update just after 4 p.m., McCall stated that the mall is still open and that there is no continuous threat to the public.
A representative for Brookfield Properties, the mall’s owner, chose not to respond.
Police used crime scene tape to shut off portions of the mall parking lot, and Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office and Oregon City police units were there.
Due to the police activity, TriMet temporarily paused its MAX Green Line in the region, the company announced on social media.
Bullet shells were scattered over the parking lot after gunshots broke out outside the Cheesecake Factory at Clackamas Town Center earlier this year in April. That incident resulted in one injury.
