Suspect Charged with First-Degree Murder in West Side Chicago Shooting

Chicago police have charged 40-year-old Jonathan Atkinson with first-degree murder in connection with the fatal shooting of Darryl Hill last weekend.

Atkinson was arrested on Thursday, just days after the tragic incident, which took place on Chicago’s West Side. The shooting occurred on Saturday afternoon in the 0-100 block of South Lavergne Avenue.

According to police reports, Hill was approached by an armed assailant who fired multiple shots before fleeing the scene.

Hill suffered gunshot wounds to his neck and back and was transported to Stroger Hospital in critical condition. Despite medical efforts, he was later pronounced dead.

Hours before the charges were announced, Hill’s family gathered for a balloon release to honor his memory.
