Steer swims across the Columbia River, runs loose on Interstate near Hood River, police say

For a 4-H steer, the steaks were high. To start the year, the steer swam across the Columbia River, then ran loose on Interstate 84 close to Hood River, wandering for miles before it was apprehended.

However, the voyage of the steer didn’t start with its Wednesday river crossing. The Oregon State Police posted on social media that it had been gone for several days after it had jumped a three-foot barbed wire fence and a five-foot fence to get out of a property in Washington.

According to authorities, the steer was spotted by fishermen on the Columbia River as it ascended the Oregon side of the river’s banks before entering the freeway. According to authorities, the animal leaped a median onto westbound I-84 despite numerous attempts, including one by a state trooper, to keep it off the road.

The steer walked west along the road’s shoulder, against the flow of traffic, until it began to follow adjacent railroad tracks. According to authorities, it went through a tunnel and several miles along the tracks. According to police, the Union Pacific Railroad slowed and halted trains in the vicinity as individuals tried to apprehend the steer.

After a young woman quietly halted in front of the cow on the railroad lines, the steer’s days-long adventure came to an end, according to the police. According to the cops, the steer halted, gazed at the woman, and then passed out from tiredness.

According to an email from Oregon State Police spokeswoman Kyle Kennedy, the steer was exhausted but generally doing well after being loaded onto a horse trailer and sent to a nearby property until it could be reunited with its owners in Washington.
