Springfield Police are investigating a shooting that occurred early Sunday morning. According to the police, officers responded to a ShotSpotter alert in the 2100 block of South 15th Street just after 1 a.m. Upon arrival, officers found two men who had been shot. They were taken to the hospital and are expected to recover.
The injured men directed officers to a nearby home, where shell casings were found in the yard. When officers attempted to contact the occupants of the home, they were uncooperative and barricaded the door.
The Springfield PD Emergency Response Team and Crisis Response Team then worked to establish communication with the people inside the home. However, after a long period of attempting to communicate, someone inside the home fired shots at the officers. The gunshots hit a rescue vehicle that several police officers were in. After additional shots were fired in the direction of the officers, an officer returned fire.
One person eventually came out of the home and informed officers that one man inside the home had been shot. He was taken to the hospital and is expected to recover. Fortunately, no officers were injured in the incident.
The Illinois State Police have been called in to conduct an independent investigation. Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Springfield Police at (217)-788-8311 or Sangamon County Crime Stoppers at (217) 788-8427.
