Chicago police have recently apprehended Deontray Gibbs, a 23-year-old man, in connection with a series of serious crimes on the city’s West Side. Gibbs was taken into custody on Tuesday in the 2600 block of S. California Avenue. He is now facing multiple charges, including first-degree murder, possession of a stolen vehicle, and arson involving property valued over $150, according to the Chicago Police Department (CPD).
Authorities have linked Gibbs to a fatal shooting that occurred on June 19, 2023. The incident took place in the 4400 block of W. Gladys Avenue, where a 31-year-old man was killed. It is still unclear if the other individuals involved in this tragic event have been arrested or are still at large.
In addition to the murder charge, Gibbs is also facing charges related to the theft and subsequent arson of a motor vehicle. On June 18-19, 2023, Gibbs allegedly stole a vehicle from the 1500 block of S. Trumbull Avenue. Following the theft, the stolen vehicle was set on fire in the 2500 block of W. Washington Boulevard.
Gibbs is set to appear in court on Thursday for a detention hearing, where the judge will determine whether he should be held in custody while awaiting further legal proceedings. This case has drawn significant attention due to the severity of the crimes involved and the impact on the local community.
The arrest of Gibbs is a notable development in ongoing efforts by Chicago police to address violent crime and vehicle theft in the area. As the legal process unfolds, more details may emerge about the case and any additional suspects involved.
