Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker has sharply criticized Sangamon County Sheriff Jack Campbell for hiring Deputy Sean Grayson, who is now facing charges in the fatal shooting of Sonya Massey. Pritzker questioned how Campbell could have overlooked Grayson’s troubled past, which includes two DUIs and a discharge from the U.S. Army for serious misconduct.
On July 6, Grayson shot and killed Massey in her home after she called for help. Campbell has defended his hiring decision by noting that Grayson had passed all required tests and evaluations. Despite this, Grayson’s background raised serious concerns, including accusations of bullying and previous disciplinary issues.
Grayson was fired following the incident and has been charged with first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm, and official misconduct. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges. The circumstances of the shooting, combined with Grayson’s problematic history, have led to intense scrutiny of Campbell’s decision-making.

The controversy has sparked calls for Campbell’s resignation. Sangamon County Board member Sam Cahnman has announced plans to introduce a resolution for a referendum on Campbell’s future. While Pritzker has not explicitly demanded Campbell’s resignation, his public criticism adds to the growing pressure on the sheriff.
