San Francisco 49ers confirm star suffered likely season-ending injury

Just starting to return to his All-Pro form, Christian McCaffrey is likely done for the remainder of the 2024 campaign.

On Sunday night, the top running back for the San Francisco 49ers injured his right knee’s posterior cruciate ligament (PCL). Kyle Shanahan, the head coach of San Francisco, acknowledged on Monday that McCaffrey did suffer a PCL injury and that he will need six weeks to heal. Shanahan also stated that McCaffrey will be placed on injured reserve, which is likely to put an end to his season, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

With five games left in the regular season, the 49ers (5-7) lost to the Buffalo Bills 35-10 on Sunday, further diminishing their chances of making the playoffs. After participating in the last three NFC championship games, they will require a minor miracle to get a postseason berth.

In the first quarter against the Bills, McCaffrey received a handoff on first-and-10 and began to run, but he was hit and fell instantly. He stood up, limped to the sidelines, and went into the blue medical tent.

But it’s possible that McCaffrey hurt his knee during a prior run during which he amassed 18 yards, which was his longest of the season.

McCaffrey’s injury-plagued season is likely over, regardless of when the injury occurred.
