LOS ANGELES Matayo Uiagalelei’s first major game in the Rose Bowl will not take place on Wednesday.
Nor was it Oregon football’s 34–13 victory against UCLA in September.
In November 2022, Mater Dei was defeated 24–22 by Uiagalelei and St. John Bosco, two California high school powerhouses. The future Duck finished the game with a late run for a first down, sacks at defensive end, and touchdown catches as a tight end.
When the No. 1 Ducks play No. 8 Ohio State in this week’s College Football Playoff quarterfinal, Uiagalelei hopes for another memorable Rose Bowl moment—a rare opportunity for few athletes. and to give him a 3-0 record in the high school-to-college venue.
Matayo Uiagalelei stated during Rose Bowl media day on Monday that the Rose Bowl is simply an iconic game and stadium for someone who grew up in Southern California. This chance and the knowledge that my family will be present are truly blessings. I am aware that many individuals will be attending.
Young Concrete, the multi-talented sack artist, isn’t incorrect. About 150 members of his extended family are anticipated to travel to Pasadena for the game, according to his father, Dave.
Naturally, the majority of them will be gathered around TVs at a tailgate party in the Rose Bowl parking lot since not all of them have tickets. Pork and a variety of other traditional Polynesian ingredients will be served.
According to Dave Uiagalelei, they had to go all out. due to necessity.
My dad is from 13 and I have 11 siblings. Dave Uiagalelei chuckled and remarked, “We have a bunch of cousins, and Matayo has about 100 uncles and aunties.” We’re hosting a large tailgate so that everyone may attend since not everyone was able to secure a ticket.
In Polynesian culture, family has a special meaning that is frequently more about helping out and being together frequently rather than only during the holidays or when it’s convenient or required. Members of extended families frequently reside together, assist in raising one another’s children, and are present almost all the time.
Uiagalelei, a rising star sophomore who led the Big Ten in sacks this season with 10.5 and is busier than ever as his team aims for a national championship, is aware of that. He claimed that he still finds time to call his father to retain his sanity and his mother for life advise.
According to Matayo Uiagalelei, that is simply love. Simply said, I’m grateful for my family and all of my relatives’ friends. Without my parents, I would not be here today. And my parents would tell you that without the help of everyone else, they couldn’t have reared me. Everyone supported my dream, and it truly does take a village. Seeing that journey get to this point is very amazing.
