A series of burglaries has left a South Side business reeling after thieves targeted Express Food Market on East 87th Street early Wednesday morning. According to Chicago police, the burglars used a pick-up truck to smash into the store, causing extensive damage and stealing an ATM.
Surveillance footage reveals the brazen crime, showing the suspects using the truck to rip the store’s facade before yanking the ATM from its location with a chain.
In less than ten minutes, they managed to steal an ATM reportedly containing nearly $100,000. This theft marks the third break-in at the family-owned convenience store just this month and the second in two weeks.
Store manager Mike Abuhamdeh expressed frustration and despair over the repeated attacks. “It looks like a tornado hit us,” he said, emphasizing the impact on his family’s business.
Despite having installed new security measures and replacing the stolen ATM just the day before, Abuhamdeh questions what more can be done. “Alarms are not enough; Chicago Police Department is not enough,” he lamented.
