Readers respond: Withhold taxes to prompt change of heart

We frequently hear the following regarding the metro area:

The second-highest individual marginal income tax rate is found in Portland. Some of the people who paid those taxes were among the large number of people who left Portland over the past three years.

We are headed toward becoming the next St. Louis, Detroit, or Cleveland. In addition to feeling insecure, residents lack faith that elected officials are committed to maintaining accountability and safety.

(Workers bash Mayor-elect Keith Wilson’s plans to head back to the office, Dec. 6) It is time for all citizens to embrace incoming Mayor Keith Wilson’s idea for city employees to return to the office. Because they work for the public, city employees must be physically accessible to the people who fund their salary.

Businesses of all sizes should withhold all taxes until public servants are back in the workplace and ready to serve the public.

Withholding taxes, in my opinion, will serve as an incentive to reframe priorities, which Portland is in dire need of right now.
