Readers respond: Unsheltered homelessness and downtown safety

I was informed this week as a patient of the Portland Clinic’s downtown facility that it would be gradually closing (the Portland Clinic will stop treating patients downtown for safety concerns, Nov. 18). In my opinion, the clinic provided downtown residents with a wide range of services in an easily accessible location.

I subsequently read the article outlining the neighborhood’s drug use and public safety concerns as the main causes behind the closure. I walk down Southwest 13th Avenue to go to the clinic. Usually, tarps and tents are strewn all over the road. Campsites can occasionally be found right across the street from the clinic. I have witnessed active drug use and impaired users in the clinic block on multiple occasions.
