People with good intentions may have a superficial comprehension, but those with bad intentions may have a complete misunderstanding. That includes dismissing the dangers of a second term for Donald Trump as president (Readers respond: Anti-Trump fears are alarmist propaganda, Dec. 4).
We rely on a large number of noncitizen workers for jobs like construction and agriculture, and expelling them would have a severe negative impact on the economy. Trump is completely unaware of the true nature of tariffs. According to Kamala Harris, his proposal for a Trump national sales tax would increase the cost of basic essentials like food, medication, clothing, and appliances, endangering global trade.
In addition to making enterprises more erratic and prone to failure, deregulation of industry puts resources like the air, land, and water that people depend on in jeopardy. Since Trump can use the Comstock Act to prohibit the provision of abortion medications without Congress even passing a law, it is now unclear when a nationwide abortion ban will be implemented. And just as the conservative majority on the Supreme Court has peeled back First Amendment safeguards and affirmative action, civil liberties and LGBTQ+ rights will also be targeted. And that’s only the very beginning.
Protecting the liberties and rights that Oregonians from all walks of life rely on will be the responsibility of Governor Tina Kotek and the Oregon Legislature for the ensuing four years and beyond.
