I was drawn to The Sunday Oregonian’s May 5 book review of The Great Stewardess Rebellion, which said, “These women made the skies friendlier for flight attendants.” When we were stewardesses in the 1960s, we had no idea that we were setting the standard for others. Both flying and the airplanes were enjoyable. These aircraft were slower and smaller. We spent time chatting and fussing over kids. Some travelers knew us by name since they flew with us so frequently. The names of the captain and co-pilot, as well as my name, were known to celebrities like bandleader Vaughn Monroe. To fly, people dressed up. They were thoughtful and courteous. It was enjoyable to fly.
