The increasing support for this important conservation initiative is reflected in Governor Tina Kotek’s request that President Joe Biden declare Oregon’s Owyhee Canyonlands a national monument. The Owyhee’s abundant wildlife, cultural heritage, and stunning scenery make it worthy of long-term preservation, as your article from December 3 emphasizes (Gov. Tina Kotek makes final pitch to Biden to establish Oregon’s Grand Canyon a national monument, Dec. 3).
This urgency is echoed by grassroots initiatives in Oregon.Sen. Ron Wyden’s neighborhood is now lined with dozens of lawn signs pleading with him to support the monument designation. Hundreds of hand-colored artworks have also been sent to him on behalf of kids and adults of all ages, expressing their hope that industrial development won’t destroy this priceless gem in the future.
In addition to respecting tribal ties to this land, a monument designation would protect more than a million acres of wilderness, protecting important habitat for animals like bighorn sheep and golden eagles. Before the end of his term, Biden has a rare opportunity to add to his record of environmental stewardship. Oregon’s natural legacy is in danger of being lost forever every day if Owyhee Canyonland is not protected. However, the window of opportunity for Biden’s administration to take strong federal action is closing.
The people of Oregon have made it clear that they wish to preserve their state’s version of the Grand Canyon. Let’s make sure the Owyhee is untamed, unspoiled, and open to future generations.
