Is it impossible for people to take ownership of their actions? It is our duty to exercise extra caution, look at drivers, and move cautiously if a crosswalk light is out (Pedestrian sues Portland for $1.1M for broken crosswalk light after motorist plows into them, Nov. 21). Almost every day, I witness people crossing crossings while using their phones, frequently in violation of the light.
I’m sick of witnessing ludicrous settlements in which the victim abdicates their own bad choices. We witness a police officer handling protesters somewhat roughly after asking them to follow the law, followed by spitting on them, cursing at them, and throwing objects at them. These officers are also people. If the roles were reversed, I frequently wonder how these demonstrators would respond. They appear to insist on not being held responsible while also adopting the stance that violent conduct and property destruction are acceptable.
