Readers respond: Modernized power grid critical to clean energy future

At Amazon, we think the grid should facilitate the energy transition, and we’re dedicated to working with utilities, grid operators, and others to make sure that new carbon-free energy sources can be swiftly integrated into the grid and that the infrastructure is ready to meet future demands. To support these efforts, we are taking concrete measures, such as pushing Oregon and national policymakers to enact laws that will speed up grid modernization initiatives, promoting investment in grid modernization technologies, and fostering innovation in the energy sector to develop new carbon-free power sources.

There are issues with the grid that must be resolved. While an ineffective interconnection process delays the installation of new power, a large portion of the U.S. grid was constructed decades ago and was not intended to accommodate distributed carbon-free sources.

Policies that enhance transmission planning and the interconnection process are supported by Amazon. We are supporting the Bonneville Power Administration’s efforts to improve the interconnection process and supporting efforts to expedite the deployment of battery storage in Oregon. While we wait for new transmission infrastructure, we are also promoting grid-enhancing technology as a rapid and efficient means of expanding grid capacity.

Additionally, Amazon is helping to create a carbon-free energy landscape in Oregon. We announced earlier this year that we will invest in a 90 megawatt wind farm in Gilliam County. Additionally, we are investing $1.2 million to install solar systems in community facilities around Eastern Oregon.

Oregon can reap the rewards of a carbon-free energy future by modernizing grid infrastructure and enacting laws that facilitate quick modernization.
