Readers respond: Helmet smashing teaches violence

The Seattle Times published a report on the incident below following the football game between the University of Oregon and the University of Washington on November 30. Unfortunately, The Oregonian did not cover this. Helmet smashing isn’t a good way to educate young guys football, leadership, or anything else.

The social media footage of Oregon football players and coaches in the locker room during halftime, when a Husky football helmet was destroyed with a sledgehammer, was covered by the Seattle Times. In the video, Ducks coach Dan Lanning is seen talking to teammates at halftime at Autzen Stadium while carrying the helmet.

Lanning informs the team defense that he wants hats on the ground after complimenting his guys on their physicality. As the team cheers, another coach smashes the helmet with a sledgehammer.
