Readers respond: Gratitude for Portland’s volunteers

A second ministry is supported by retired pews in a local church basement. We fidgeted and rested in one. Ecumenical pantries supplied a large portion of Portland’s food supplies prior to the outbreak. Geographically, services were separated, and our residence was in the Northeast. Aside from the 8-inch hole in the wall that was left there after the superintendent took out our shower fan, the bungalow was adorable. When our bathroom space heater was declared a fire danger, that hole indirectly resulted in our eviction.

Considering our advantages, we felt bad as we waited in the basement. Everyone there sensed that we were being judged by society as failures. However, these individuals decided to assist us for hours. How many people were already employed that week? As she brought our cart into the pantry, a woman grinned and showed out new products and her favorite recipes. We didn’t realize she had been saying the same things month after month, year after year.
