Readers respond: Famous mind behind Big League Chew

The initial batch was made in 1979 by former Portland Mavericks pitcher Rob Nelson and an unidentified Mavericks bat boy, according to the article about the case over Big League Chew shredded bubble gum (Big League Chew, conceived on Portland baseball field, sues manufacturer in sticky trademark dispute, Nov. 19).

Todd Field, a little better renowned now as a director with multiple Oscar nods, including three for the 2023 film Tar, was that child. I’m sure Field doesn’t mind, given how much he cherishes his days as the team’s batboy.

Burns, Joe, Portland
