Readers respond: Desensitized Americans allowing anti-immigrant actions

I’ve been reminded of Woody Guthrie’s lyrics for “Deportee” (Plane Wreck at Los Gatos) by the president’s recent push to order a mass deportation of immigrants.Look up the song and read or listen to it. Americans are being desensitized by anti-immigrant propaganda into implicit agreement with white supremacist views, just as they were when a plane carrying people being deported to Mexico crashed (Oregon among Democratic states mulling new safeguards for immigrants amid Trump policy, Jan. 25).

Will our children pick up the slack and go to the restaurants, hotels, farms, forests, fisheries, and fields? I don’t think so. Even high-paying, entry-level construction positions are struggling due to a shortage of competent candidates.

What my fellow Americans choose to vote for disappoints me. Our nation was founded by immigrants and their offspring. One of them is me.
