Readers respond: Concerns about Trump aren’t just propaganda

What did President-elect Donald Trump do in his first term that had such a negative effect on Oregon, a recent letter writer inquired (Readers respond: Anti-Trump worries are alarmist propaganda, Dec. 4). My response is that Trump dispatched federal agents to Portland during the 2020 protests. The mayor of Portland, the governor of Oregon, and both of the state’s Democratic senators objected, yet these agents detained demonstrators in unmarked vans, used tear gas on crowds, assaulted reporters, and operated without obvious identity, according to The Guardian. Why did Trump act in this way? According to the Guardian investigation, Trump and his followers viewed the government involvement as a model that could be applied in other communities around the nation.

Fears about a second Trump presidency, according to the letter writer, are primarily alarmist, fake news, and propaganda. As a resident of Portland, Oregon, I am concerned that Trump now believes that the use of the military within the United States is legitimate and that he intends to target the enemy within.
