Readers respond: Billionaires versus the People

The well-known line, “We the people of the United States,” opens our nation’s founding document. When President Abraham Lincoln said in his 1863 Gettysburg Address that “government of the people, by the people, for the people shall not perish from the earth,” he reiterated the idea that our government is made up of citizens who govern themselves.

One wonders if Lincoln’s concern has come true given the last presidential administration. The 47th president claims to be a multibillionaire. His cabinet choices include a number of billionaires. While millionaire businessmen benefited from being close to the president, the people who elected him were left outside in the cold when the swearing-in was moved indoors to the Capitol Rotunda.
