Illinois Governor JB Pritzker recently joined officials from the U.S. Secret Service and Chicago Police Department to discuss security preparations for the upcoming Democratic National Convention (DNC). This announcement follows a recent shooting at a rally for former President Donald Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania, less than two weeks ago.
The Secret Service emphasized that an incident like the Trump rally shooting must never happen again. They have been collaborating closely with local, state, and federal partners to create a comprehensive security plan for the DNC. This plan includes establishing secure perimeters for both vehicles and pedestrians around the United Center and McCormick Place, the two main venues for the convention.
Governor Pritzker assured the public that the extensive safety measures and preparations should provide a sense of security for everyone. He stated, “With these comprehensive public safety plans and security measures, we should sleep soundly knowing how much preparation has been done.”
Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling added that while the police will protect the First Amendment rights of potential protestors, they will not tolerate any violence or vandalism.
