A new football coach has been hired by Prairie View.
He is a former Texas Southern football player who just finished an incredible Division II season at Valdosta State.
Tremaine Jackson will succeed Bubba McDowell, whose contract was not extended last month after three years in charge, Prairie View revealed over the weekend. Following an undefeated season and a trip to the NCAA Division II National Championship Game, Jackson was in his third season at Valdosta.
A formal introduction is anticipated on January 7, and the hire becomes official on January 1.
In a statement, PVAMU sports director Anton Goff said, “Coach Tremaine Jackson is a natural fit for Prairie View and for what we want to see our program become.” His background, leadership, and commitment to the success of student-athletes are a wonderful fit with the principles and objectives of our university.
We have high expectations for Coach Jackson, and we know he will meet them. We anticipate that he will have a beneficial influence on both our football program and the Prairie View community as a whole.
During his three seasons at Valdosta State, Jackson amassed a stellar 30-9. He became the first Black coach in the history of the Gulf South Conference to win a championship in his second season, leading the Blazers to victory.
In terms of passing offense, first downs, completion %, passing efficiency, net punting, and fumbles recovered, the Blazers were among the top 15 teams in the country in 2023. The team also recorded the highest grade point average in the history of the program.
Jackson served as head coach of the Colorado Mesa Mavericks, defensive coordinator at Abilene Christian, and defensive line coach at Texas State before to taking over Valdosta’s team. Additionally, he served as the University of Sioux Falls’ assistant head coach for a while, where he helped guide the Cougars to a four-season total of 32-5.
Jackson started his coaching career as the defensive line coach for the Texas A&M University-Kingsville Javelinas. From 2008 to 2011, he was Texas Southern University’s defensive coordinator, and he helped the club capture the 2010 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) championship. Jackson also visited Evangel University and Trinity Valley Community College.
He replaces McDowell, who after three rather good seasons was let go by Prairie View. Despite leading the Panthers to the top of the West Division during the previous two seasons, including one trip to the SWAC Championship Game, McDowell was coming off a dismal 5-7 overall and 3-5 SWAC campaign.
During his career, McDowell’s teams finished 17-18 overall and 14-10 in the SWAC.
