Prairie View A&M fires successful football coach McDowell after three years

Following a three-year run of great success, Prairie View A&M athletic director Anton Goff announced on Sunday that football coach Bubba McDowell’s contract would not be renewed.

McDowell led the Panthers program to consecutive SWAC West titles and one trip to the SWAC Championship in his first two seasons as head coach. With Prairie View lost its final two games to finish fourth in the division with a 5-7 overall and 3-5 SWAC record, this was the former Houston Oilers defensive back’s lone season without a victory.

With an overall record of 17-18 and a 14-10 SWAC record, McDowell, who had been with Prairie View since 2011, first served as defensive coach and defensive coordinator before taking over after Eric Dooley left for Southern in 2022.

“Coach McDowell’s dedication to helping our student-athletes succeed in life both personally and professionally is admirable and a true reflection of his character,” Goff said, thanking McDowell for his leadership with his team both on and off the field.

For this report, neither Goff nor McDowell returned calls from the Defender.
