Portland woman charged in fatal October crash

According to court documents, a Portland woman was charged with manslaughter in October for allegedly murdering someone while driving under the influence.

Rosa Victalina Hitzfeld, 59, was taken into custody by the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday on suspicion of killing Marcia Abbate on October 13 and gravely wounding two other people. The indictment was handed out by a grand jury last month.

According to the sheriff’s office at the time, the collision that resulted in Hitzfeld’s arrest happened at approximately 9 p.m. in the 800 block of Northeast Fairview Parkway and involved a Volkswagen Golf and a Honda Civic. While the other two passengers in the Golf were transported to a hospital, one of the two, later named as Abbate, passed away at the spot. Additionally, Hitzfeld, the Civic’s driver, was sent to a hospital.

Following her recovery from the injuries she received in the collision, Hitzfeld was placed into jail, according to the sheriff’s office. She faces seven accusations of deliberately endangering another person, two DUI charges, four assault charges, and second-degree manslaughter. To each of them, she entered a not guilty plea.

According to her obituary, Abbate, who was eighty-two, lived in California and had been a speech therapist. According to the obituary, she was struck by a car while visiting relatives in Portland.
