Portland Winterhawks

After six games in the East, the Portland Winterhawks defeated the Tri-City Americans 6-4 at home on Friday to reclaim their spot in the US Division. They had 50 shots versus the Ams with 3-point performances from Tyson Jugnauth, Kyle Chyzowski, and Josh Zakreski.

With the victory, they maintained their tie for fourth place in the Western Conference with the Prince George Cougars.

They now have an overnight trip to Wenatchee, where they will face the club who defeated them in their most recent game before traveling to the east. Wenatchee ambushed the Winterhawks, who were coming off a three-in-three weekend.

It is necessary for them to resume their penalty kill. 31 for 46 (67%), since they got back from Christmas vacation. It dropped from fourth to tenth place.

McDonough, who received a game misconduct for cross-checking Tri-City’s Jaxen Adam in the face, is anticipated to miss the Winterhawks’ game. He will most certainly receive a suspension that lasts for several games.

Chyzowski, who is still good for approximately two points per game, extended his point streak to seven games.

Zakreski scored for the fourth time in five games and for the second consecutive game.

Buttazzoni ended a three-game scoreless run with a goal and an assist.

Defensemen
20 27-Tyson Jugnauth (102 – 64/43)

16 22-Griffin Darby (39 – 3/39)

Jugnauth’s 3-point performance extended his point run to nine games.

In his debut WHL game, P Eni Ka contributed an assist. Although his game wasn’t very good, he seemed to be able to play.

Goalies (Career games – season save%/games)
18

74-Marek Schlenker (21 – .891/21)

17 1-Ondrej t bet k (31 – .887/31)

You would think it’s Schlenker again because they have been switching goalies. His save percentage since Christmas has been.878, although those figures are heavily skewed by his most recent performance, which involved mopping up for t bet k in the 10-1 loss to Swift Current.

Wenatchee Wild

The Wenatchee Wild recently defeated the Everett Silvertips, who are ranked first, at home. Dawson Seitz won 3-2 with a goal 1:55 into extra. Halfway through the third, Evan Friesen knotted the score. They were only outshot 28-23 against an Everett squad that outshoots opponents by 12 shots per game. They will be put to the test to see if they can support it in another home game since that was a good game.

They’re doing well for a relatively unknown squad that dealt away its two best players at the deadline. They are 4-5 since January 1st, when they made those transactions, and 8-6 since December 13th.

They are now one point ahead of the Kelowna Rockets and three points clear of the Seattle Thunderbirds and Kamloops Blazers in a somewhat close battle for the last playoff berth in the Western Conference. Two home playoff games against Everett might earn Wenatchee and Seattle some respectable revenue, but it might ultimately be a battle to see who will be fodder for the Silvertips in the first round. That will determine whether they succeed or fail during their six-game Eastern swing, which begins on January 31.

Forwards
20 10-Evan Friesen (252 – 46/41)

20-Tye Spencer (226 – 23/39)
19 14-Dawson Seitz (207 – 21/37)

17-Deagan McMillan (203 – 13/27)

18-Shaun Rios (34 – 30/34)
18 16-Maddix McCagherty (108 – 21/37)

19-Miles Cooper (122 – 39/41)

22-Zane Saab (85 – 17/43)

27-Luka Shcherbyna (103 – 29/35)

17 8-Morgan Hackman (8 – 0/8)

9-Ben Davis (33 – 6/33)

15-Grant Reid (38 – 4/34)

23-Jeramiah Roberts (52 – 4/20)
16 28-Caelan Joudrey (54 – 14/42)

With his assist on Friday, Shcherbyna’s point streak now stands at six games. It finished up a one-game ban for a major goalie interference and began the game following their victory over the Winterhawks.

Seitz and Friesen, the lone regular remaining from the Winnipeg Ice two seasons ago, are each on a three-game winning streak.

Rios, who came here from Tri-City, has scored more over one point per game in 27 games. They’ve done a fantastic job assembling a team.

21-Reid Andresen (261 – 32/42)

25-Lukas McCloskey (25 – 15/25)
18 5-Josh Fluker (149 – 8/15)

6-Seth Tansem (117 – 4/24)

7-Brayden Pankey (66 – 2/40)

26-Brendan Dunphy (22 – 12/22)
17 13-Tyler Russell (20 – 3/20)
16 12-Radoslav Dimitrov (25 – 1/25)

Three weeks earlier, they won in Portland thanks to a strong defense led by Andresen.

Goalies
19 30-Alex Garrett (41 – .895/21)

35-Brendan Gee (44 – .891/10)

In the victory versus Everett, Gee stopped 26 of 28 shots.

To fill in for Carson Bjarnason, Garrett traveled from Everett to Brandon, which is 1300 miles away, for a few weeks before being traded to Wenatchee, which is 100 miles away. He had a solid game against Tri-City in relief, but he struggled against Spokane and Lethbridge—no shame there.
