Portland Winterhawks

At the January 9 trade deadline, the Portland Winterhawks were remarkably quiet. In their final transaction before the deadline, they acquired the rights to Lochlan Tetarenko, the son of former Winterhawk Joey, from the Saskatoon Blades in exchange for a conditional pick in the tenth round.Portland was not supposed to make much of an impact.

They now travel east to Manitoba and Saskatchewan for a six-game road swing. Two seasons previously, they went 2-4 on the equivalent trip with a club that was about in the same position as this one (swifting Winnipeg for Swift Current). Given that three of the clubs were decimated at the trade deadline and the other three (see below) don’t expected to be significantly ahead of the Winterhawks, it would be a little disappointing if they didn’t perform better than that.

The Winterhawks are no longer the league’s least experienced team after finishing last all season by a significant margin. The Moose Jaw Warriors and Saskatoon Blades, who were all major sellers before the deadline along with the Rockets and Pats, are presently a few games ahead of the Regina Pats and Kelowna Rockets. In the upcoming week, Portland will play Saskatoon, Moose Jaw, and Regina.

Gavin McKenna, an NHL super-prospect, tied Chyzowski for the lead in the WHL scoring race with a 2-point performance throughout the week. First and fifth are separated by just two points. Following seven consecutive multipoint games, Chyzowski failed to score against Wenatchee last Saturday.

Buttazzoni’s run of 12 points was broken.

It was not surprising that Luke Wilfley was sent back to his OHA Colorado 16U. With two points in six games as a 16-year-old, he had a respectable run and should be useful if he returns the next season.

The concerns over Yaremko’s ailment materialized. Month-to-month, he listed. Will he return in time for the postseason?

Defensemen
20 27-Tyson Jugnauth (95 – 51/36)

43-Ryder Thompson (272 – 14/38)
19 59-Carter Sotheran (193 – 18/36)
18 12-Cole Slobodian (43 – 2/38)
17 7-Kayd Ruedig (39 – 12/37)
16 22-Griffin Darby (33 – 3/33)

Jugnauth leads Lukas Dragicevic by seven points in the WHL defenseman scoring race as they begin the trip.

With six defensemen and one of their Euro berths still open, it’s a little surprising that the Winterhawks made it beyond the trade deadline.

Goalies (Career games – season save%/games)
18 74-Marek Schlenker (17 – .894/17)
17 1-Ondrej t bet k (26 – .893/26)

When they lost 1-3 last week, goaltending took a minor step backwards, with Schlenker and T. Bet K. combining for two hooks and an.870 save %. With an inexperienced partnership, this is to be expected.

Brandon Wheat Kings

It’s possible that the Brandon Wheat Kings may emerge from the trade deadline as the Eastern Division’s top pick. Despite selling off the majority of their lineup, the Saskatoon Blades remain five points ahead of them and will be lucky to qualify for the playoffs. In any case, Brandon’s point % is nearly comparable. They are four points ahead of the Swift Current Broncos and two points ahead of the Prince Albert Raiders. The Central Division appears to be much ahead of the East, of course.

They made a few small trades and one large one. The major one was trading defenseman Charlie Elick and a draft selection for Jordan Gavin and Merrek Arpin from Tri-City. They selected the second overall pick in the 2021 draft for the third overall pick in the same draft when they selected Gavin for Elick. a trade of two players who, despite their lofty selection positions, haven’t done as much to dominate the league. Gavin and Arpin should make their Wheat Kings debuts; for Arpin, it would be his 100th game in the league, but you can never be sure.

They have been playing without attacker Dominik Petr and goalie Carson Bjarnason, who were both in World Juniors and may be the best in the league. Without them, they won four of the previous five games and went 5-2-0-1.

72-Marcus Nguyen (289 – 38/35)

91-Nolan Flamand (252 – 34/34)

82-Dominik Petr (94 – 26/23)

71-Brady Turko (42 – 15/35)
16 9-Jaxon Jacobson (38 – 25/31)
15 56-Prabh Bhathal (8 – 2/8)

Marcus Nguyen, who played 269 games with Portland before being traded to the Wheat Kings after they ran out of space among their 20-year-olds, had one final Winterhawks game. Nicholas Johnson, who joined Brandon in the Nate Danielson trade that helped the Winterhawks win the Western Conference the previous season, is also having a great season.

Nguyen has scored five points in a row. Since leaving for World Juniors on December 7, Petr has been in a three-game winning streak.

McQueen, who has an A rating from Central Scouting, is selected fourth overall in the 2021 draft. He has had a week-to-week injury since October.

The owner’s son, Jacobson, leads the league in scoring among 16-year-olds.

Despite being sent down, Bhathal was still on the roster and had been playing in recent games.

Defensemen
20 27-Luke Shipley (250 – 29/35)

They determined they had sufficient defense with Shipley and Mantei to be able to trade Elick. With three sixteen-year-olds, it’s an intriguing game. In the Danielson trade, they also sent Rhett Ravndahl, who joined Johnson from Portland, to Kamloops.

Goalies
19 64-Carson Bjarnason (136 – .913/16)
18 50-Ethan Eskit (44 – .903/14)
16 35-Dylan McFadyen (1 – .816/1)

After being acquired from Everett, Alex Garrett participated in the last five games. He finished 4-1, but they traded him to Wenatchee when Bjarnason returned, thus his time with Brandon was brief. They needed Garrett because Eskit had been injured, and they traded Garrett because it looks like he’s almost ready to return. In addition, they made a last-minute trade with Edmonton for goalie Hudson Perry, which might be insurance for future campaigns.

Bjarnason wasn t picked in the WHL draft, but he s the only Wheat King drafted by the NHL, a 2nd-round pick of the Flyers. which is somewhat unexpected considering how many good draft picks Brandon possesses. He didn’t participate in Canada’s historic run at the World Juniors.
