Portland weather forecast for winter solstice calls for rain, cool temps

The final weekend of holiday shopping before Christmas Day is predicted to bring rain and cold temperatures to the Portland metro region.

The first day of winter, Saturday, is expected to bring strong winds to the Columbia River Gorge and the Oregon coast, along with widespread precipitation over northwest Oregon, according to the National Weather Service. Gusts might be as high as 65 mph.

By Saturday afternoon, the persistent rain is predicted to break off into showers. Lows in the 50s are predicted for the high temperature.

The shortest day of the year, sunset, will occur around 4:30 p.m. The Northern Hemisphere experiences its shortest day and longest night of the year on Saturday, which is the winter solstice. For those who prefer more sunshine, there is good news: beginning on Sunday, the days will become a little bit longer each day until the end of June.
