Defender Kelli Hubly will not be rejoining the Portland Thorns in 2025, the team announced Monday, amid a major roster shuffle.
On her Instagram story, Hubly revealed her departure on Monday, expressing her excitement for this new phase of her life.
After eight seasons with the team, Hubly is leaving, and it is claimed that she will do so on Friday. Sophia Smith, a forward for the Thorns, took to social media to voice her shock at the news.
Smith posted on her Instagram story, “Not my best friend,” followed by a sad face emoji and the words, “I love you forever.”
Following the club’s roster update in December, Hubly was one of several players set to become free agents. Along with renowned forward Christine Sinclair, defenders Becky Sauerbrunn and Meghan Klingenberg were also scheduled to become free agents. Both Sauerbrunn and Sinclair have declared their retirement.
Hubly debuted with the Thorns in 2017 and went on to start in 2021. During the 2024 season, Hubly played in 20 games, starting 19 of them.
