Sam Hiatt, a free agency defender, was signed by the Portland Thorns to bolster their defense, the team announced Friday.
Hiatt spent the 2024 season with NJ/NY Gotham FC before joining the Thorns. She made 17 appearances, 12 of which were starts.
Since Sam played with both Seattle and Gotham, we’ve had the chance to see her up close for many years. In a statement, Thorns coach Rob Gale said, “She has shown herself to be capable at this level and fits the positional need and player profile that we are looking for as we begin to build for the upcoming year.” Sam’s character, desire to play in Portland, and dedication to developing her game as a member of this squad have all impressed me after our conversation.
After being chosen by the Seattle Reign with the 33rd overall choice in the 2020 NWSL draft, Hiatt began her career with the team. She played in 45 games throughout her four years with the Pacific Northwest club, all of which she started. Hiatt was a part of the Reigns team that took home the NWSL Shield in 2022.
