Early on Thursday, Portlanders will wake up to rains that intensify throughout the morning and turn into a persistent downpour by lunch.
According to the National Weather Service, a warm front moving north from California will cause further rain and snowfall throughout a large portion of Oregon on Thursday.
The majority of that rain won’t reach Portland until the late morning or early afternoon. About 47 degrees will be the high temperature.
By the afternoon, snow levels should rise to 5,500–7,000 feet south of the Santiam Pass. Snow levels at Mount Hood will remain between 4,000 and 5,000 feet. Additionally, when a wintry mix of precipitation, including icing on roads, bridges, and overpasses, occurs in the Columbia River Gorge Thursday afternoon, a cold air pool will persist in Hood River County and Skamania County.
Parts of the upper Hood River Valley could see freezing rain through Friday, according to forecast models.
Rain is expected to persist in Portland until Friday. The meteorological office predicts that by around 10 a.m., the rain will transition to showers. The temperature will rise to roughly 51 degrees.
Rainfall totals for Friday are predicted to be between 0.50 and 0.75 inches north of Salem and between 1 and 1.25 inches south of Salem.
With primarily showers expected in Portland on Saturday, rain rates will somewhat decrease during the weekend. The temperature will rise to almost fifty degrees.
Sunday appears to be a rainy day as well, with some more consistent rain in the morning. The peak temperature is predicted to be around 53 degrees, which is roughly seven degrees warmer than typical for the first part of January.
Will December continue to be too warm into January? At least for the next ten days or so, current projections indicate this probability.
