The Iowa Board of Medicine has decided to reinstate the medical license of Dr. Venkateswara Karuparthy, a physician from Bettendorf, Iowa, who was criminally charged with sexual abuse of a patient. This decision follows a series of legal and professional developments that began in December 2018.
In December 2018, Dr. Karuparthy, a pain management specialist, faced criminal charges in Rock Island County, Illinois. The charges alleged that he had sexually abused a female colleague at Integrative Pain Centers in August 2018. The accusation involved Dr. Karuparthy allegedly fondling the woman while providing her medical care. Following the filing of these charges, Dr. Karuparthy voluntarily ceased practicing medicine in Iowa.
The woman involved in the case also filed a lawsuit against Dr. Karuparthy and Integrative Pain Centers, claiming that during her treatment, he injected her with a drug that impaired her ability to move and then proceeded to touch, grab, fondle, and kiss her without her consent. Dr. Karuparthy denied these allegations throughout the legal proceedings.
In June 2021, court records show that Dr. Karuparthy pleaded guilty to one count of reckless conduct and one count of assault. As part of his sentence, he was fined $2,500 and required to undergo a mental health evaluation and treatment. Despite these legal troubles, in July 2022, the Iowa Board of Medicine, apparently unaware that his license had expired, declared his license to be free of any restrictions.
In January 2023, Dr. Karuparthy sought to have his expired medical license reinstated. By June 13, 2024, the Iowa Board of Medicine charged him with violating the law in his medical practice. Although the board’s publicly available records did not detail the specific circumstances of this charge, it is believed to be related to his 2021 conviction.
On the same day the charge was issued, the board reached a settlement agreement with Dr. Karuparthy. The terms of this agreement allowed for the reinstatement of his medical license, but with significant conditions. His license will be monitored by the board for one year and will remain on probation during this period. Additionally, Dr. Karuparthy agreed to have another licensed medical professional present for all patient examinations, treatments, and consultations. He is also prohibited from establishing a solo medical practice while his license is on probation.
This reinstatement decision has raised concerns and discussions about the balance between professional accountability and second chances in the medical field. Dr. Karuparthy’s case highlights the complexities involved in managing professional conduct and ensuring patient safety, while also navigating legal and ethical considerations.
By reinstating his license with strict conditions, the Iowa Board of Medicine appears to be attempting to strike a balance between allowing Dr. Karuparthy to resume his medical career and ensuring that he is closely monitored to prevent any future misconduct. This case serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining rigorous standards and oversight in the medical profession to protect patients and uphold the integrity of healthcare providers.

The settlement between Dr. Karuparthy and the Iowa Board of Medicine reflects a compromise that aims to address both the physician’s rehabilitation and the protection of patients. As the year of probation progresses, the effectiveness of these measures will be closely observed to ensure that the standards of medical practice are upheld and that patient trust in the healthcare system is maintained.
